This is a small list of suitable cages for rats, some of which I have had in the past and some which I haven't. When you go shopping for a rat cage most of the cages which are labelled as Rat cages aren't suitable - you will normally find better cages which are for ferrets, rabbits or even birds.

Rats like to live in groups and you should buy the biggest cage you can afford and if your new to keeping rats I would recommend getting a trio to start off with.

Your cage should give each rat around 2 square foot of space. You can use cage calculators like the one on fancy-rats, but these are only to be used as a guide to help you decide. Remember, you owe it to your pets to give them a comfortable and happy home, not just the minimum they can survive in. Rats kept in a large and enriched environment with both ratty and human interaction will develop more character and make better pets.

A few guide to cage buying:
1. Buy the best cage you can afford to suit the rats and you.
2. Watch out for bar spacing - some rabbit, ferret and bird cages have bar spacing over 1" which is easy for most does and kittens to escape from.
3. Male rats tend to like more floor space where as female rats like to climb.
4. Some rats will chew plastic so those with plastic bases may need replacing.
5. Rats require cages to suit their requirements which vary throughout their lives. Cages suitable for young kittens may not be suitable for adult or elderly rats.

I have broken this list down in to sections to try and make it easy to see the cages that are available.

Ferplast Jenny (also NEW Jenny KD)
Suitable for 6 rats.
Size: 80cms x 50cms x 80cms

I had a Jenny for 5 years and it wasn't the best cage as it was very large and a nightmare to lift up and down for cleaning. I would change the smaller door to a larger one which you can purchase here. I housed 4 rats in my Jenny.

For 2009, the jenny has had a face lift and has a large door on the front and can be flat-packed in to base.

I love this cage. I bought this cage after wanting a cage to house 2 groups so I could have bucks and does. This cage spilts in to 2 seperate ones so was perfect. The trays that come with the cage are tto shallow so I had some made which are 8cms deep. I love the doors which open fully and can come off. This cage is so strong and strudy that I have no worries with it at all. Cleaning is nice and quick which gives me more time with the rats.

Ferplast Mary
Suitable for 2 rats
Size: 80cms x 50cms x 37cms

This cage shouldn't be used as a full-time home for rats. I use this cage for my nursing does and kittens until they are 3 weeks old. I have used this cage as a retirment home for elderly rats who struggle to get around the larger cages and for young kittens whilst they are being introduced to the others. The bars on this cage aren't coated so will rust over time.

Savic Ruffy
Suitable for 2 rats
Size: 80cms x 50cms x 38cms

Very similar to the Mary, this cage isn't really suitable as a full-time home for rats.

Cages which are UNSUITABLE!

Ferplast Ratatout 60/80/100
Rats shouldn't be kept in tanks due to the ventilation being poor (this allows ammonia to build up which is bad for rat chests) and no climbing opportunities.

Gerbilariums
These are unsuitable due to them being too small to house rats.

Pennine Rat Starter Kit
This is the worst thing you could buy for rats. The cage is far too small and the pet bedding is dangerous to rats!

Ferplast Hamster Cage
These hamster cages are big enough for a hamster let alone a rat!
