Rabbit & Rat foods

There are lots of ready made rat foods available on the market but most aren't suitable as a main diet. Most rat foods have poor quality or unsuitable ingredients which is why most people feed rabbit food. I prefer to make my own using Rabbit food as the base an adding dog kibble and human breakfast cereals as this gives them a bit of variety and is much better for them.

Most breeders will recommend a diet called "The Shunamite Diet". This is a mix which you make up at home and it can be varied to give your rats something a bit more interesting.
It consist of:
Base Food 60%
Dog kibble or Uncooked Pasta 10%
Breakfast cereal 30%

This section is to help you find a food which you can source locally and to give you an idea of what people think. I have tried quite a few but just because mine didn't eat it doesn't mean that yours won't.

Rat Foods

XtraVital Rat Food

I haven't used this so can't comment

Burgess Suparat Nuggets

I haven't used these but I would never recommend that you feed nuggests as they are so boring and very lacking in nutrition

Pets at Home Rat Muesli

I used this when I changed my rats from Reggie Rat. They seemed to like it but it only comes in 1kg packs.

Reggie Rat

I use to feed Reggie before I used forums and joined clubs and found out it a ratty equivalent of a McDonald's.

I don't recommend this as a base food, but it is ok as a treat.

Reggie Rat

Rupert Rat

Rupert Rat

Rupert rat is one of the feeds that I use to use for my rats. They seem to eat most of mix they do leave a small amount of the tiny pellets that are in this mix. It is quite expensive but it is available in smaller bags (1kgs & 15kgs)

Supreme Selective Nuggets

I have used these as mixed them with the Pets at Home Muesli to add a bit of variety. They do seem to like them.

Rabbit Foods

Alpha Herbal Deluxe

This is by far the most popular base food used by rat owners.

I use this as one of my rotation foods and it is my prefered food to feed nursing mums and kittens. They hardly leave any of the mix at the end of an evening.

Harrisons Banana Brunch

This smells lovely and the rats love the banana pieces. I try not to feed it too often due to the banana pieces. It does have a low copper content, so I add crushed Winalot shape biuits to the mix to increase this.

Harrisons Meadow Munch

As with the Banana mix,it smells wonderful and the rats like this mix but itsn't as popular as other I have tried.

Mr. Johnsons Belverdere Rabbit

I haven't tried this mix yet so can't comment

Mr. Johnsons Belverdere Tropical fruity

This mix was quite popular and I do order a sack occasionally to offer my rats something a bit differen. There are a large number of pellets so quite a bit of waste.

Mr. Johnsons Supreme with Fruit

My rats liked this mix more than the Tropical mix so is now one of my rotation feeds. It smells really nice and there is very little waste.

Sneyd's Fruity Rabbit

This mix went down well with my rats. They ate most of the mix and it does smell rather nice. I do use it occasionally but I have to order it online as I can't get it locally.

I order it from: My Pet Direct they also stock a Rabbit Deluxe and a Rabbit natural which may be suitable.

Pets @ Home Rabbit Muesli

Bestpets Fuity Rabbit

This mix went down well with my rats. They ate most of the mix (they won't touch the pellets) and it does smell lovely. I do use it occasionally but I have to order it online as I can't get it locally.

I order it from: Feedem

Mr. Johnson's Clover Crunch

My guys wouldn't touch this and a lot of it got left at the end. It seems to be mostly pellets which is the thing they won't eat.

Clover Crunch Mix
Burgess Supa Natural Rabbit

I haven't tried this food but it is available in 3kg bags which is more manageable if you only have a small group.
Supa Frutti Rabbit Food

I haven't tried this food but it is available in 1kg bags which is more manageable if you only have a small group.

Burgess Supa Rabbit Deluxe

Mine weren't very keen on this mix as there are quite a few pellets in it. Everything else was eaten.

I order this from Paws Pet Supplies in Banbury

Crofts Rabbit Food

This is sold by a local pet shop and is their own branded rabbit food.

Tesco Value Rabbit Food

This comes in a 2kg sack so may be suitable for owners with few rats. It does have a low Copper content so will need some Shape biscuits to be added to it.

Albert E James And Son Ltd - Rabbit Apple Supreme

My rats really liked this mix but there are too many pellets in it which they won't touch, which is a massive shame. It comes in 20kgs sacks and is a reasonable price.

Henry Bell & Co - Rabbit No. 5

My rats weren't as keen on this mix as the pellets were quite big. They did eat it all but it took some time.

Mr Johnson's Gloria Guinea Pig Mix

.
