Make & Bake

I would highly recommend getting a copy of the Scuttling Gormet by Alison Campbell as she has some recipes that a great to get you started.

Some of these are Dog treat recipes which I make for the dogs so you may find you need to cut the measurements down to 25% for a small group of rats as I have just over 40 rats here (March 2010). A lot of these recipes use "cups" as the measurement - a cup to me is a pint glass.

Treat Balls

These are great cause you can add what ever you like to them. Mine seem to like:
* Peas & Sweetcorn (1 cup)
* Strawberry shortcake mix (bird feed) (0.5 cup)
* Lentils (0.5 cup)
* Seed mixes
(0.5 cup)

Basic Recipe:
1.5 cups of porridge oats
0.5 cup of Fruit Museli
0.5 cup of EMP (bird food)
Choosen ingredient - around 0.5-1 cup depending on what you are adding
Mix altogether with 1.5 cups of hot (not boiling) water.
Roll in to small balls and chill in fridge. Serve to ratties after 2 hours.

Cheese Biscuits
Cheese Biscuits

Ingredients:
1.5 cups of Wholemeal Flour
1 cup of Grated Cheddar
0.24 cup of Veg. Oil
8 Tbl. Water
(May vary slightly)

Directions: Preheat oven 180 degrees.

Cream the ingredients together, adding the water one tablespoon at a time to help bind the dough. When it begins to form a ball, roll it out on a floured surface, using cookie cutters, cut the dough into fun shapes and place on cookie sheet. I wash mine over with a little egg to make them nice and shiny.

Bake approx. 10-15 mins. until lightly browned.

Try making these using different ingredients:
- Puree Apples
- Strawberry shortcake mix (bird feed)
- Peanut Butter
- EMP
- Avacardo (You won't need the water if you use this)
-
Banana (You won't need the water if you use this)
-
Baby Food - 2 or 3 spoons from a Jar

Tear 'n' Treat Bags
These don't require any baking but I thought I would add them to this page as they are a great item for ratties to help keep them enriched as they hang from the tops of your cages or can be hid around.

Items required:
* Some penny sweet bags approx 4" x 4"
(try ebay)
* Sissors
* String
* some yummy treats -
rat rations is the best place for this!
* kitchen towel
* wrapping paper
(optional)

How to make:
1. Open you sweet bag and place a few pieces of each of you choosen ingredients in. How much will depend on how many rats you have.

2. Once filled with goodies, fold the bag in half horizontally, then in half again vertically (should end up with a sweet bag around half the size.

3. Wrap the bag up inside a piece of kitchen towel (as if you were wrapping a Christmas pressent). If you wish you can also wrap up in some themed wrapping paper at this point.

4. Use the string to keep the bag closed.

5. Give to your rats :)
